As Russian President Dmitry Medvedev announces he will punish Georgia, reports from the war-torn country suggest that Russia may not be fully withdrawing. Both France - the current president of the European Union - and the United States cautioned Russia to abide by the terms of the ceasefire.
Meanwhile, the Manchester Guardian notes that Georgia's military has been decimated, and separately that Russia has threatened a nuclear first strike on Poland, and Ukraine offered to participate in a European-US missile shield.
Neither the diplomatic nor the legal ramifications of the conflict are clear yet, but Medvedev's government appears to remain determined to create facts on the ground before law or diplomacy can alter them.

well, I think you should give Russia some time to pull out, they’re probably still skeptical about pulling out right away. I mean how would you feel if Russia decided to put a missile defence system in Canada? I bet our country would be worried. So you have to understand Russia's point of view.
I think both US and Russia should stop playing the who's dick is bigger game and leave eachother alone. Georgia attack South Ossetia first, what did you suspect Russia was gonna do? everyone should stop acting like Children and stop playing the blame game and move on with our lives. But maybe a War is something our government wants. Would be so sad if it were true….
noones gonna learn from our past mistakes till everyone is Doomed. You think hideing in your little Doomsday vaults is gonna save you. But wait till another country that hates us discovers them.
If the Russians want to fight a Proxy war with us again - fine. I bet if we saw to it that all those fine tanks and APC's were turned into scrap metal, they might think twice next time. Where the hell is Charlie Wilson…….
easy solution to this problem–a 50,000 pound nuke dropped right over the president of russia's head
we kicked russia's ass in movies rocky an rambo so I say lets make this for real an bring this war away from the sensless BS in afghan to the russian doorsteps hoooorah
Russia did not have a choice. Georgia has attacked Ossetia and killed people. Russia protected Ossetia and has got in a trap. It was the trap of Georgia and Georgia knew, that Russia cannot easy look at murders of people. This trap has been prepared by the USA and Georgia to incite other countries against Russia.
Now there is an information war in which Georgia and USA blacken Russia.
Cold war, and perhaps and present the government of the USA as always being covered with struggle for democracy wishes to untie. The government of the USA deceives the citizens muddling news and does not bring to a focus that Georgia the first has begun war against Ossetia. Behind struggle for democracy of the USA struggle for oil as always disappears.
Thanks - an interesting bit on BBC world service Tuesday seemed to point a lot of the blame here on South Ossetian paramilitary forces. One elderly woman the interviewer spoke with said the Russian troops were actually rather polite. On the other hand, however, it seems Russia is a bit heavy handed here - to know surprise. Human Rights Watch said it would like to see an investigation on war crimes, but then we run into the sticky “unlawful combatant” territory because they also mentioned S. Ossetian rebels. In the same interview on BBC, Sec. Rice was asked how the U.S. would feel, however, if Russia forces decided to show up off the coast of Florida. Very interesting times.
As Paul Craig Roberts reminds us today: “What does the Caucasus have to do with the North Atlantic? Why is NATO, which was created to keep the Soviet Army out of Western Europe, still around almost two decades after the disappearance of the Soviet Union? Why has its membership doubled, and why is it being extended to the Black Sea? Is Mongolia next? The US strategic objective , to ring Russia with bases and puppet states in order to exercise hegemony over Russia , will lead to war, the destruction of liberty and perhaps life on earth. This gratuitously insane neoconservative foreign policy is one that will lead to nuclear war. . . . The US used force to rip Kosovo out of Serbia and to hand it to Muslim drug runners in exchange for a US military base. The US bombed Serbian civilians and accused the Serbians of war crimes. South Ossetia has been autonomous since the early 1990s from which date Russian and Georgian peacekeepers have been in S. Ossetia. The US puppet president of Georgia attacked S. Ossetian civilians with his American and Israeli trained and equipped army, killing about 2,000 and driving 30,000 into Russia, and the Georgian peacekeepers turned their weapons upon the Russian peacekeepers. The American puppet, installed by the neocon National Endowment for Democracy, committed this war crime in order to ethnically cleanse S. Ossetia of Russians and to end the separatist movement in order to smooth Georgia's entrance into NATO. The “Russian invasion” was a response to this US-sponsored war crime.” For the rest, go here: http://www.lewrockwell.com/roberts/roberts257.html
